Azulejo Galo
A 250-piece generative series inspired by Lisbon’s blue-and-white azulejo tilework and the Galo de Barcelos, Portugal’s symbol of luck and good fortune. Each piece is a unique tile composition, printable and foldable into an origami rooster.

About the Project
Azulejo Galo draws from Portuguese azulejo, the hand-painted ceramic tiles found across Lisbon. Each piece is a unique generative tile composition that combines traditional patterns with the iconography of the Galo de Barcelos.
The Galo de Barcelos, the Rooster of Barcelos, is Portugal’s beloved folk symbol of honesty and good fortune. Legend tells of a man unjustly sentenced to hang who said a roasted rooster at the judge’s table would crow to prove his innocence. The rooster crowed.
Print, Fold, Display
Every Azulejo Galo is also the unfolded crease pattern for an origami rooster. Print your token on letter paper, follow the folds, and the flat tile composition collapses into a sculptural Galo to display alongside its digital counterpart.
IRL Experience
NFC Summit 2026, in a former flour factory in Lisbon.
Collectors booked 15-minute appointments to sit with me at the booth. Each session followed the same flow: mint a piece on Highlight, print the unique tile composition, and fold it together into an origami rooster. The finished bird went up on the strings of paper galos hanging above the booth.
Every IRL collector also took home a second piece, folded by me, as a keepsake of the sitting.
