Azulejo Galo

A 250-piece generative series inspired by Lisbon’s iconic blue-and-white azulejo tilework and the Galo de Barcelos — Portugal’s celebrated symbol of luck and good fortune. Each work is a unique canvas of tiles, designed to also be printed and folded into an origami rooster.

About the Project

Azulejo Galo grew out of a long fascination with Portuguese azulejo — the hand-painted, tin-glazed ceramic tiles that line the facades, churches, and metro stations of Lisbon. Each piece in the collection is generated as a unique tiled canvas, riffing on the symmetries, palettes, and motifs of the traditional craft while remixing them with the iconography of the Galo de Barcelos.

The Galo de Barcelos — the Rooster of Barcelos — is Portugal’s most beloved folk symbol, said to represent honesty, integrity, trust, and good fortune. The legend tells of a man unjustly sentenced to hang, who declared that a roasted rooster at the judge’s table would crow to prove his innocence. The rooster crowed. Centuries later it became the unofficial emblem of the country.

Bringing the Galo into a generative on-chain release felt inevitable: a symbol of good fortune, multiplied 250 times, each one different, each one carrying its own composition of color and tile.

Print, Fold, Display

Every Azulejo Galo isn’t just an on-chain artwork — it’s also the unfolded crease pattern for an origami rooster. Print your token on standard letter paper, follow the fold, and the flat tile composition collapses into a sculptural Galo you can put on a shelf next to its digital counterpart.

At NFC Lisbon, every IRL mint included a one-on-one sitting with the artist to print and fold a unique piece together — a literal collaboration between the collector, the algorithm, and the artist. Each fold makes the piece truly your own.
