Bryan Brinkman Sketches
Raw sketches and one-of-one studies.
Bryan Brinkman Sketches is the first volume of one-of-one digital sketches and studies minted on Ensemble in November 2022. These works tell Brinkman’s story and perspectives reduced into simpler forms — loose, quick explorations that capture ideas before they become finished pieces.
About the Collection
Brinkman’s initial goal with Sketches was to create works that tell his story and perspectives but are reduced into simpler forms that anyone can relate to. When sketching ideas, he usually pulls in visual ideas and then builds them into commentary, keeping them loose and quick, trying not to get stuck on one idea too long. He lets them simmer and returns to see which one sparks the most inspiration.
He often finds himself drawn to images seen in the emoji lexicon because that’s our universal visual language, and bringing those visuals back in future works helps link ideas from one piece to another. He was also inspired by dadaist work like Magritte’s “The Treachery of Images,” and loved the idea of sprinkles coming from a cloud, which then transformed into colored raindrops in the final piece.
Some of these sketches have direct visual connections to the final pieces, while others are just sparks of ideas — capturing the raw creative process that begins every Brinkman artwork.
