An exploration of motion, persistence of vision, and the flicker that makes animation possible.
Flicker Fusion is Bryan Brinkman’s 2021 edition series on NiftyGateway — eight looping animations that deconstruct the building blocks of motion. Each piece isolates a single gesture and replays it at the threshold of perception, where individual frames dissolve into continuous movement.
About the Collection
The collection takes its name from the flicker-fusion threshold — the frequency at which a flickering light appears steady to the human eye. Below that rate you see discrete frames; above it, smooth motion. Every animation lives in that liminal space, inviting the viewer to see both the trick and the magic at once.
Bull Run and Swipe anchor the rarer tiers, while Cloudy, Shuffle, Break, Twirl, and Step form a larger open-edition set that captured the kinetic energy of the 2021 NFT moment. Together they remain one of the defining edition drops of that era.
The ideas Brinkman explored here — recursion, flicker, and looping motion — resurfaced years later in FL1CK3R, a 2025 series of recursive Bitcoin Ordinals that reconstructed the same principles on a completely different chain.
